American Golden Plover on Lemnos — A Mega Rarity for Greece

RARE BIRDS

A surprising and exciting rarity has just appeared in the northern Aegean: an American Golden Plover (Pluvialis dominica) was discovered on Lemnos Island, just north of Lesvos. This Nearctic species is exceptionally rare in Greece, with very few confirmed records.

The bird was first found on 21 November by Eric Scheuermann (https://ebird.org/checklist/S285639967), who documented the sighting and shared the news with the birding community. Following the report, interest grew rapidly — and today the bird was refound by not one, not two, but six birders who immediately travelled to Lemnos to see it for themselves.

The fact that multiple observers were able to relocate the bird confirms its continued presence on the island, offering a unique opportunity for anyone aiming to add this species to their Greece list.

American Golden Plovers are long-distance migrants breeding in the Arctic tundra of North America and wintering in South America. For one to appear in the Aegean is truly remarkable and highlights once again how dynamic and unpredictable migration can be in this region.

A fantastic moment for the Greek birding community — and a reminder that the Aegean still holds surprises for those who look closely.

At Aegean Birding, moments like this remind us why the Aegean remains one of the most exciting regions for birdwatching in Europe. From everyday migration movements to unexpected rarities like the American Golden Plover on Lemnos, each sighting tells a story — and we’re here to share it.
