Tiny jewels in the city – A surprise encounter in urban Thessaloniki
A cloudy Thessaloniki morning brought a surprise: a flock of Goldcrests and Firecrests feeding on the elm tree outside our flat. A beautiful reminder that even in the city, nature is never far away.
THESSALONIKI URBAN BIRDING

Not every birding moment begins in a wetland or a forest. Sometimes it starts quietly, with a laptop, a coffee, and a grey Thessaloniki sky.
It was a cloudy day with light rain, the kind of morning when the city feels muted and slow. I was working next to the window when a series of sharp, delicate tsee-tsee calls broke through the background noise. At first I ignored them, but the sound continued—quick, bright notes that didn’t belong to sparrows or tits.
I stepped out onto the balcony to investigate. On the Ulmus tree right next to our flat, the branches were alive with movement. A small flock of Goldcrests, joined by a few Firecrests, were actively searching every leaf, every twig, every hidden corner of the canopy.
For a moment I simply watched. These birds are almost weightless—Europe’s smallest—and yet they move with incredible energy. They hovered in front of leaves, hung upside down from thin twigs, and slipped through the foliage like sparks of colour. The soft yellow crests of the Goldcrests glowed in the dull light, while the Firecrests, with their striking facial patterns, brought an unexpected flash of brightness to an otherwise grey morning.
Instinctively, I grabbed my camera and returned to the balcony. Photographing them was a challenge—fast, agile, and never still for more than a second—but incredibly rewarding. Each frame felt like capturing a tiny treasure.
What made the encounter special wasn’t just the species, but the setting. This wasn’t a mountain forest or a remote gorge; it was an ordinary urban neighbourhood of Thessaloniki. Apartment blocks, passing cars, distant city noise—and right in the middle of it all, a lively feeding flock of some of Europe’s most delicate woodland birds.
Moments like this are a reminder that you don’t always need to travel far. Even in the heart of the city, nature finds its way into our daily routines. All it takes is a pause, a bit of curiosity, and sometimes simply opening the balcony door at the right moment.
After a few minutes the flock moved on, disappearing as quietly as they had arrived. The elm tree returned to stillness, and I went back to the laptop—grateful for this unexpected burst of wild beauty in the middle of Thessaloniki. A small encounter, but one that turns an ordinary rainy day into something memorable.
