Our visit to the Evros Delta near Alexandroupoli marked the final stage of our northern Greece birding journey with Raymond de Smet (https://pbase.com/raydes), following memorable days at Lake Kerkini (https://www.aegeanbirding.gr/three-winter-days-at-lake-kerkini-frost-pelicans-eagles-and-wild-encounters) and Porto Lagos https://www.aegeanbirding.gr/from-kerkini-to-evros-delta-a-winter-day-on-the-road-and-in-the-field. Located at the northeastern edge of Greece, close to the Turkish border, Evros Delta is one of the most important wetlands in southeastern Europe and a prime destination for winter birdwatching in Greece.

Even before entering the core wetland system, the coastal stretch from Alexandroupoli towards the delta revealed impressive diversity. The shoreline was full of gulls, including Slender-billed Gull (Chroicocephalus genei), Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis), Mediterranean Gull (Ichthyaetus melanocephalus) and Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), with a single Common Gull (Larus canus) standing out among them. Along the sandy and muddy sections, several waders were feeding actively, including Eurasian Oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus), Grey Plovers (Pluvialis squatarola), Dunlins (Calidris alpina) and Red Knots (Calidris canutus). This rich coastal birdlife immediately highlighted the ecological importance of the Evros region.

We arrived during intense winter conditions, with temperatures dropping to –4°C and strong winds pushing the real-feel temperature close to –10°C. The open wetlands amplify the cold, making birdwatching physically demanding. However, winter is precisely when Evros Delta becomes most spectacular, hosting vast concentrations of waterfowl and large raptors.

Across both days, the scale of birdlife was extraordinary. Hundreds of geese occupied the agricultural fields, while thousands of ducks covered the lagoons and flooded areas. Large flocks of Common Teal (Anas crecca) moved in synchronized waves, Northern Pintails (Anas acuta) rested in elegant groups, Eurasian Wigeons (Mareca penelope) whistled across the marshes, and Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and Northern Shovelers (Spatula clypeata) fed in the shallows. The density and diversity of wintering waterfowl confirm the Evros Delta as a key winter refuge and migration bottleneck in northern Greece.

One of the most breathtaking moments occurred at sunrise, when thousands of Bewick’s Swans (Cygnus columbianus bewickii) were roosting together on the lagoon. As the early light intensified, the swans gradually lifted in successive waves, flying eastward toward Turkey. The synchronized take-offs, combined with cold blue light and rising vapor, created exceptional wildlife photography opportunities and one of the most memorable spectacles of the trip.

Raptors added further drama to the frozen landscape. Five White-tailed Eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) were actively hunting in front of us, patrolling the wetlands with slow, powerful wingbeats. Observing this iconic species in such raw winter conditions reinforced why Evros Delta is regarded as one of the best raptor-watching locations in Greece. Dozens of Western Marsh Harriers (Circus aeruginosus) quartered low over the reedbeds, maintaining constant movement across the marsh.

The combination of coastline, lagoons, reedbeds, open agricultural land and riverine habitats creates remarkable habitat diversity, supporting high bird species richness even under extreme weather conditions. Winter birdwatching at Evros Delta is demanding but immensely rewarding, offering dramatic landscapes and exceptional concentrations of birds.

Despite the freezing temperatures and relentless wind, the experience was unforgettable. For serious birders and wildlife photographers, Evros Delta in winter remains one of the most powerful birding destinations in Greece.
